MOSCOW, October 25. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin watched an exercise of the country’s strategic deterrence forces via video conferencing on Wednesday.
The Russian president joined the exercise from the Kremlin’s situational center and listened to the reports by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
The exercise was carried out with the forces and capabilities of the ground-based, naval and airborne components of the Russian nuclear deterrence forces, the Kremlin press office said on its website.
The strategic deterrence forces are a component of the Russian Armed Forces designated to deter aggression against Russia and its allies and inflict a defeat on the aggressor in a war employing various types of armaments, including nuclear weapons. The strategic deterrence forces consist of the strategic offensive and defensive forces.
The strategic nuclear forces (the nuclear triad) are a key component of the strategic offensive forces and are composed of the Strategic Missile Force, the naval component (the naval strategic nuclear forces) and the airborne component represented by the Aerospace Forces (the airborne strategic nuclear forces).
Russia began developing its nuclear triad in the 1950s. Its basic armament presently comprises stationary and mobile ground-based intercontinental ballistic missile systems, strategic nuclear-powered submarines and also strategic bombers carrying strategic air-to-surface cruise missiles and air bombs.
During the strategic deterrence exercise, Russia test-launched a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Plesetsk cosmodrome, the Kremlin press office reported on its website.
"A Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was test-launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome towards the Kura proving ground in Kamchatka," the press office said in a statement.

Red alert for Russian nuclear strategic forces
B. Putin gave an order for the sudden mobilization of the country's nuclear arsenal as the Israeli ground operation in Gaza is about to begin and no one knows how it will develop.
The Russians have so far not confirmed that this is the annual exercise of the strategic nuclear deterrence forces called "Grom", which causes particular concern.
According to Russian information, NATO will further strengthen its forces in the Eastern Mediterranean in the next few hours, which accelerated the developments.
Sudden mobilization of Russian nuclear forces
Russia has conducted exercises of its strategic nuclear deterrent forces, chaired by President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin announced on Wednesday.
"Under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, training took place with the forces and means of the land, sea and air elements of the nuclear deterrent forces.
During the training, practical launches of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles took place," the Kremlin said in a statement.
During the exercises, a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome at the Kura missile test site in Kamchatka, the Kremlin added.
“Additionally, a Sineva ballistic missile was launched from the Barents Sea by the strategic nuclear submarine Tula. Tu-95MS long-range strategic bombers, which fired cruise missiles, also took part in the exercises," the statement said.
"The objectives were fully achieved," the Kremlin added.
Shoigu also said the Russian air force would conduct complex nuclear strike drills in response to an enemy nuclear strike.
Massive counter-offensive nuclear strike scenario
The chiefs of the Russian General Staff and the Ministry of Defense have told Vladimir Putin about conducting a drill that involves "conducting a nuclear strike in response to an enemy's nuclear attack against Russia."
Russian Defense Minister Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov briefed Putin on the course of the exercise:
– The RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome at the Kura Training Field in Kamchatka
– The R-29RMU Sineva ballistic missile was launched from the Tula Project 667BDRM Delfin K-114 class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) in the Barents Sea.
– Two Tu-95MS strategic bombers with cruise missile launchers are also participating in the exercise.
The exercise of strategic deterrence forces included an assessment of the readiness levels of military command structures, leadership capabilities and operational staff responsible for organizing the command of subordinate troops.
